This is a process that has been around for centuries. Skin brushing opens pores, stimulates sweat glands, and increases blood circulation while encouraging the body to release waste material from the cells near the surface of the body. It will get rid of dead skin, dirt, and some acid. It will make your skin glow while it moves lymph and blood. Dry body brushing is an incredible tool to use to get your lymph moving and keep it moving—this makes a healthy you! It is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to detox at home. You can do it every day or just a few times a week and reap the benefits. The dead skin comes off and this means you will have fewer bacteria on your skin (healthier for you and for those around you). For best results, follow with a hot shower to open the pores allowing the toxins to come out and be washed away.

Before you start, here are your rules of thumb:
• Start on the right side first—always do right side then left side.
• Always brush towards the heart (note: arms are considered to be something that hangs down at your side, so you brush from the hands to the shoulders).
• You will do all of these moves in threes.
• Note: This will probably give you energy. You may not want to do this just before going to bed, as you may not sleep.
• You don’t need to cover all of the skin, but you can if you want.

Winter Skin Tips

Not only does the cold air outside parch our skin, the indoor heat dries it out more. As the temperature drops, so does the humidity. So, the cold air sucks all the moisture from your skin and we then further the issue by taking long, hot showers to only wash as our protective skin oils and the result is dry, flaky skin that is extremely itchy.

Your face will feel dry, and the colder weather will cause inflammation, redness and sensitivities. You should be using a mild cleanser with no detergents, as they too will strip whatever oils you have left from the winter and a good slightly heavier night moistuzuer. Exfoliating once or twice a week. Your lips will also take a beating due to the thinner skin and lack of oils on top of having a cold or flu, which in turn causes more mouth breathing and blowing of the nose that causes more drying, this all sets up dry, chapped lips. A good lip balm is need before going outside and before bed to lock in the moisture. Since we ingest most of what we put on our lips you can also apply olive or avocado oil or shea butter, which is rich in vitamin A, and all promote healing.

Your hands and feet will take a beating as well, they will become dry, cracked, and itchy. Use a good thick moisturizer and stop in for a mani/pedi!

A good strategy for healthy winter nourished skin starts within as author Ping Zhang, Ph.D, a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner promotes. This means drinking more caffeine-free fluids, including water, fruit juices, and herbal teas. Food that will nourish winter skin and yourself include soups/stews, root vegetables, beans, miso/seaweed, garlic and ginger. Eating warm hearty soups, whole grains, and roasted nuts help to warm the body’s core and to keep us nourished.

Autumn-proofing your skin

As the seasons change so should your skin care. Now that summer is over it is time to repair any sun damage and start preparing your skin for the cooler winter weather.

Time to Nourish

Many of us suffer some skin sensitivity, irritation, and redness as the seasons change. From the over-exposure of sun on the skin during the summer could mean that your skin is dehydrated. As the season autumn approaches our skin will start to dry easily and become dull, so now is the time to start to hydrate the skin and preparing for the dryer winter season.

'Flushing occurs when your skin needs cooling down after you go from cold to hot environments,' says Janine Bird, training and education manager for Prescriptives. 'In order to let through a calming flood of fresh blood, your capillaries dilate. If this occurs regularly, they weaken and may rupture, leading to permanent redness.'

Even though it is the autumn months that we are in, don’t forget the sunscreen as the sun rays are still harmful to your skin.

Moisturizing

Moisturizing is always an important part of your skin care regime and especially durring the autumn months, due to the lower huminity in the air, your skin will start to become dryer.
Be cautious with oily skin that your moisturizer is specific to your skin type, as too heavy of a moistirizer and dry skin can lead to clogging the pores and affecting your skin in a damaging manor. Make sure to take the time to apply and really nourish your skin from head to toe and pay extra attention to the rough spots like your elbows, knees and feet. Heels will often cracke starting with the autumn months into the winter, so use a good quality pumice stone to remove the dead skin from your feet. As moisturizing is important so too is exfoliating the body and face regularly. And don’t forget the hands, they will need it the most! This is also a good time to start scheduling pedicures to keep your feet in tiptoe shape.

Nourishment for the body

Your diet should be enriched with a lot of vitamin A, C, and E, which will help keep you skin more healthy. Foods to look for during the autumn would include: apples, beets, bell peppers, bok choy, broccoli, figs, cauliflower,carrots, cranberries, brussel sprouts, grapes, leeks, pears, plums, pumpkin, pomegrantes, persimmons, red cabbage, spinach, sweet potatoes, whole grains, wild rice, winter squash, yams. The following spices are also benificial; cinnamon, garlic, ginger, horseradish, rosemary, sage and thyme. Stay hydrated with plenty of water and to get your vitamin D, sit in the sun 10 to 20 minutes before 10 AM is very theraputic for your body.

Summer skin care tips and solutions for glowing summer skin

Hot weather, salt water, humidity, and chlorine take their toll on our skin during the summer months. You should drink plenty of water through the day, not merely to replenish humidity lost to the heat but also to help blush toxins out of the body and keep skin looking healthy and glowing.

Dr. Michelle Copeland recently was kind enough share her top summer skincare tips-"Your skin has different needs depending on the month. During the summer, the glands produce more oil, so switch to a product that's not so moisturizing. The zone around the nose and down towards the mouth contains a lot of glands, so you probably want to go easy on it all year round. People often wonder whether they should stop exfoliating during the summer because they think the dead skin is protecting them from the sun. While it's true that surplus surface cells offer a slight shield against rays, that benefit is outweighed by the greater gain you'll get in encouraging cell turnover. Always wear SPF to protect from the harsh UVA/UVB rays of the summer months. Apply sunscreen every day to your skin and lips. An easy way to remember your sunscreen is to use a daily moisturizer with SPF built right in! Sunblocks containing clear zinc oxide offer both UVA and UVB protection with the added benefit of the antioxidant properties of zinc." An easier way to remember sunscreen is; Wearing sunscreen everyday will significantly cut back on accumulative sun damage: It’s not about the SPF number, it’s how often and how much you re-apply your sunscreen.

Facials are equally important; an independent study at Harvard University has shown there is a strong connection between touch therapy and the overall heath of you skin and body. Having a facial is something that improves not only your skin, but also your overall health. Facials are recommended one at least every four to six weeks.
For the body as well as the face, the number one tip is exfoliation! For the body dry brushing and or body scrubs will turn over the dead skin cells and reward you with glowing skin. A gentle facial exfoliant applied 3-5 times a week or a facial will show much improvement for the health of the skin on the face.

Foods for healthy skin include: Berries, which give you a powerful punch of antioxidants that help you skin fight off free radical damage from the sun. Avocados are loaded with B-complex vitamins and essential fatty acids, which give avocados anti-inflammatory properties. Salmon is an important building block for healthy, younger skin by supplying essential fatty acids; whole grains contain selenium, which is an important mineral for maintaining healthy skin. Also, look to sweet potatoes for vitamin A (beta carotene) which does wonders to create a great complexion, green leafy veggies that are loaded with vitamins including zinc which contributes to a healthy glow to your skin, as well as citrus which contain vitamin C and bioflavonoids that help your body detoxify and support collagen in the skin, that helps keep the skin firm and young looking. We can't forget about olive oil, which provides healthy fats that are important maintaining healthy skin membranes. Your cell membranes hold water and help maintain the plump healthy look of your skin, and helps prevent wrinkles and age lines. Last but not lest antioxidants, are excellent to protect cell damage from the sun, Green Tea extracts and Grape Seed extracts, even pomegranate extracts, which is said to have more antioxidants that similar amount of green tea or even red wine.
